Anything covered in gold is good, right? Well, Domino’s Sugar took that to heart when they released a new type of sugar in 2019. It’s called golden sugar, and unfortunately, it isn’t made from the 24-carat stuff. The sugar gets its name from the straw-yellow hue of its crystals, and if you’re an avid baker, you might try integrating the product to put a tiny twist on your favorite recipes.

What is golden sugar?

When it comes to sugar, you’ve probably noticed that there are many kinds—white, brown, demerara, coconut, and so on. So why add another type of sugar in there?

Here’s what makes golden sugar different. White sugar, a.k.a. the regular sugar you probably know, love, and bake with, goes through an extraction process to remove all the molasses, which naturally occurs in sugar cane. In brown sugar, most of that molasses stays put, giving it that deep brown color and maltier taste. Golden sugar sits somewhere in between with some, but not all, of the molasses extracted.

What does golden sugar taste like?

The molasses still present gives golden sugar a bit of a nuttier flavor, but not as deep as brown sugar. It’s basically the perfect in-between.

Is golden sugar healthier?

Not necessarily. It’s just less processed. Domino’s is one of the only brands that produces it, putting the product on the market when they found customers were looking for a sugar that was less processed. But it has the same amount of calories!

How can I cook with golden sugar?

Golden sugar to white sugar uses a one to one measurement for substitutions. Feel free to mix it into your coffee or throw it into a cookie recipe, but don’t expect the flavor to be noticeably different, especially after baking it.
